The Importance of Imaginative Play

As people, we crave entertainment. Watching TV, going to the theater, attending sporting activities add fun and flavor to life. Young children crave entertainment, but theirs is a need that must be met to ensure adequate development. In order for this need to be met properly, children must have an active involvement in that entertainment.

A child learns about his world through exploration. I watch my son as he discovers a new object and then proceeds to find as many uses for it as he possible can. He makes new discoveries on his own, and sometimes I show him other possibilities. All of his senses are involved in this exploration.

Scientific researchers and child specialists have found that children need time for creative play. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest toy with all the lights and sounds either. Children need to be able to use their imaginations. Sometimes the best thing in the world could be a cardboard box. I have found that leaving a drawer and a cupboard available in the kitchen with items such as plastic lids and pans, my son has a hay day.

I am very grateful to not have TV channels in my house, because it gives my child the opportunity to create his own entertainment. It also gives me the chance to structure learning experiences and be involved in activities and games. He loves to read and experiment with containers and objects; of course his favorite items are the ones that I do not want him to have.

The environment is so rich with opportunities and experiences just waiting for your child to reach out and touch, feel, hear, smell and taste. The choicest moments can be when a young toddler feels accomplished because she got to help stir the cookies, or taking a few minutes to roll outside in the leaves. Let your child develop his imagination, and maybe yours will enhance as well as you seek to provide new opportunities for growth.
